-If breastfeeding in the cradle or side-lying positions then make sure baby's chest is facing you (not the ceiling). As this will not only make feeding for your baby easier to suck and swallow, it will also decrease the chance of nipple trauma.
-Baby should have a wide mouth before and after attaching.
-His top lip should be curled upward and his bottom lip downward (it should look like Special K lips).
-Baby's chin should be touching your breast and the nose should be clear.
-Most of the areola should be in the mouth.
-Baby should have deep rhythmic sucks that should be painless. Audible swallowing can be heard when the "milk comes in".
-Following the first few sucks of a feed it can be normal to feel some discomfort but should ease quickly, if pain persists then take baby off the breast by placing a finger in baby's mouth to break the suction and then take baby off and then attempt to re-attach.
